Arali flower: Benefits, care and growing methods
Arali flower or Nerium oleander, often known as nerium or oleander in English, is a shrub or small tree that is used as an ornamental and landscaping plant in temperate and subtropical climates worldwide.
Arali flower has long been thought to be a poisonous plant due to the presence of various harmful chemicals. Because it is bitter to0 people and most animals, poisoning incidents are uncommon, and the risk of human death is low.
Cultivation history of Arali flower
The cultivation of Nerium oleander can be traced back millennia, particularly among the Mediterranean Basin’s famous ancient civilizations.
Rhododaphne, nerion, rhododendron, and rhodon were some of the names given to the plant by the ancient Greeks. Pliny verified that the Romans didn’t have a Latin name for the plant and instead used Greek words. It was known as scinphe by the Egyptians, rhode daphne by the North Africans, and icmane by the Lucanians (a southern Italian group). Pliny and Dioscorides both said that oleander, when mixed with rue and drunk, was a powerful remedy to venomous snake bites.According to a 2014 study published in the medical journal Perspectives in Biology and Medicine, oleander was the chemical used to cause hallucinations in the Pythia, Apollo’s female priestess, better known as the Oracle of Delphi in Ancient Greece. The symptoms of the Pythia’s trances (enthusiasmos), according to this hypothesis, correspond to breathing the smoke of or chewing small amounts of oleander leaves, which were sometimes referred to as laurel in Ancient Greece, leading to confusion with the bay laurel mentioned by ancient authors.
Arali flower benefits
Ornamental
In warm-temperate and dry subtropical areas, Nerium oleander is extensively planted as an ornamental shrub or informal hedge, and in cooler climates as a conservatory plant.
Pest control
Due to the presence of cardiac glycosides, primarily oleandrin, oleander is very dangerous to humans, pets, livestock, and birds. Nausea, vomiting, cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension (low blood pressure), and death can all be caused by ingesting the substance. Rats have been poisoned with its sap. Sugarcane mite and citrus leafminer are also attracted to the leaves, which have insecticidal properties.
How to grow Arali plant
Propagation
Arali shrubs may be propagated by rooting stem cuttings, or starting them from seed.
From cuttings
The cuttings should be taken in the early spring, before they blossom and have produced new growth. The cutting will grow to the point where it may be put in the ground or in a container in about a year. Protective gloves should be worn before interacting with any part of the plant. After that, remove a six to eight-inch stem from the parent plant, making sure not to cut any new growth and cutting just below a leaf node. Remove all but three or four leaves from the stem’s tip, and place the partially stripped cutting in a cup with three inches of tap water in a window with no direct light. Every two or three days, you should change the water. Pot the plant in a container once the roots have grown to an inch or two in length.
From seeds
Propagation can also be done via seeds. Fill a shallow tray or a one- or two-inch peat pot halfway with pre-moistened soilless mixture to start seedlings indoors. Place a few seeds in the top of each pot or several on the tray, about two inches apart. Because oleander seeds require sunshine to sprout, only a small dusting of potting soil or a pinch of vermiculite should be used to protect them.
Arali flower plantation and care
These plants like full sun, but they can also thrive in partial shade. They don’t require good soil or a specific pH, but they do require well-draining soil.
Winter is when they go dormant, and spring and summer is when they grow and bloom. This indicates that the best periods to plant oleander are in the early spring or late summer to early autumn, just after the blooming period has ended. Each shrub should be planted in a hole that is exactly the same depth as the root ball and two to three times the width of the root ball. Backfill after planting with the soil you saved from digging. Place the transplant in the hole, ensuring that the main stem’s base is level with the dirt (not beneath the ground). Fill the hole halfway with soil, being careful not to pack or crush it down. Water sparingly, aiming for the roots and avoiding wetting the leaves. Allow the roots to drink for a few minutes, then carefully fill the rest of the hole with earth and give it another drink. During dry spells during the season, water them as needed.
Spray the roots and below the leaves with a hose or watering bucket. These shrubs can succumb to root rot if they come into contact with standing water, especially in the winter. Make sure to supply well-draining soil in addition to the below-leaf watering technique. Choose a planter that is twice the width of the root ball to grow oleander in containers. It is beneficial to modify the soil with compost, both to improve water absorption and to ensure good drainage.
Container-grown shrubs do not require fertilizer, but they do require full light and may require additional water due to the fact that dirt in pots dries up more quickly than soil in the garden.
Some extra tips
When working with oleander, always wear gloves and long sleeves to protect yourself from the toxic, milky sap.
In really dry times, provide one inch of water per week.
If the leaves begin to yellow, remove them and stop adding further water…read more
